Safe & Solo: Maintaining Independence In Older Age With Peace Of Mind

Wellbeing

Share

If you’re in your older years and live alone it’s essential to take precautions to ensure your safety and wellbeing. We’ve got some strategies for you ladies, so listen up!

Personal Emergency Response System (PERS)

These are especially important for seniors who suffer from medical conditions. A PERS includes a wearable pendant or wristband equipped with a button that, when pressed, alerts emergency services or a designated caregiver. These systems provide some peace of mind knowing help is just a button press away!

Smart Home Technology

With smart home devices like motion sensors, smart locks and doorbell cameras, you’re able to monitor your home remotely and receive alerts about any unusual activity.

Medication Management

Even if you’ve been on medication for years, it’s so easy to miss a dose. Using pill organisers, and pill dispensers will help keep you organised. There are also a range of smartphone apps that send daily reminders to help you manage your medications safely and make sure you’re getting your dose at the right times.

Fall Detection Devices

Fall detection devices come in various forms, ranging from wearable devices to smart home systems. We’ve got a few examples for you!

  1. Wearable Pendant Or Bracelet: These devices are worn on the body, typically as a pendant around the neck or a bracelet on the wrist. They are equipped with sensors that detect sudden movement or changes in movement indicative of a fall. When the device detects a fall it automatically alerts designated emergency contacts.
  2. Smart Watches And Fitness Trackers: Many modern smartwatches and trackers include fall detection features! Even the Apple Watch contains fall detection technology. Like wearable devices, the watch or fitness tracker uses built-in sensors to detect falls and can prompt the wearer to confirm whether they need assistance. If the wearer doesn’t respond, then the device can automatically send alerts to emergency contacts.
  3. Smart Home Assistants: Voice-activated smart home assistants like Amazon or Alexa can be integrated with motion sensors to detect falls. For example, if you were to fall, you can simply shout out to the device! The smart assistant can recognise the distress call and alert emergency contacts.
  4. Bed And Chair Sensors: These are special sensors designed to be placed on a bed or chair, they can detect when someone gets out of bed or sits down. Sudden changes in movement such as a rapid descent from standing to sitting, can indicate a fall. The sensors can then trigger an alert to designated caregivers.

By prioritising your health and safety with these aids, you can enjoy living independently with a sense of security. Ensure you keep up with yourself! We recommend reassessing your needs and updating your safety measures over the years to ensure personalised protection.
